The new year always brings a wave of lists of the best from the previous year and what is coming in the new year. My list only has one item on it. You must go mobile with your site or be left behind. Having a mobile site in 2014 will be the standard instead of a “nice to have” item.
Web usage is increasingly moving to alternate mobile devices, and your site must be able to compete. Users will quickly exit your site if they can’t navigate easily and quickly on a phone or tablet. They will gravitate to other sites that are easy to navigate. You may only get that one chance, and if you miss it they are gone, possibly never to return. Let’s face it: all trends point to the decline of the desktop as a medium for consumer research and information retrieval.
Look for a bit at a few numbers to support the need. There are 2.1 billion mobile web users in the world. The country with the most mobile users is the United States, with 62.5 Million users with 4G. China is second, with 325.5 million, 225 million of whom are 3G subscribers. Most of this usage is targeted to Social networking, local information, and news.
As you develop your strategy for keeping your web site relevant, you need to focus on the fact that the top two tasks being used on mobile devices are social networking & local information. Both of these items should be driving traffic back to your site. Let’s analyze Google’s data on mobile search activity for a moment.
According to Google:
- 1 in 7 searches are now mobile
- 1 in 3 are local searches, and after finding the business, 61 percent of the users called the business; 59 percent visited
- 79 percent of smartphone users use their smartphones to help with shopping
- 71 percent of smartphone users that see TV, press or online ads do a mobile search for more information
You need to be ready to capture the audience and display what they need quickly and easily. Converting your current site or creating a new site is something we can help you with. Don’t get left behind, give us a call.
